The HLT57715 Diploma of Practice Management will equip you with the leadership and management skills you need to advance your administration career in the medical sector. Throughout your studies, you will learn how to direct junior staff and achieve the business goals of your practice. As a Practice Manager, you will be responsible for organising and controlling the functions and resources of professional practices, such as administrative systems and practice personnel, while also managing the promotion and operations of small to medium-sized health practices. This includes managing patient records and accounts, ensuring work health and safety compliance and coordinating hiring, performance management and job training. You will learn to manage risk, implement infection control policies and, most importantly, deliver a high level of service to patients.

Practice Manager

The Practice Manager at a health or dental clinic is responsible for overseeing the business and administrative side of the practice. Their primary duties include supervising and recruiting junior staff, managing records, maintaining a database, processing payroll instructions and ensuring the overall smooth running of the practice.

Education

Whilst there are no formal recognition entry requirements mandated by the training package, your skills and capabilities to undertake this training product will be assessed and advice on suitability will be provided during the pre-enrolment process. 

It is strongly recommended that you gain industry experience prior to entering the course. 

Minimum Age

You will need to be at least 16 years old. If you are under 18 your enrolment form will need to be signed by a parent or guardian.

Residency Status

You will need to be a permanent Australian resident or equivalent.

Work Placement

Where required, we may assist you in identifying work placement options.

Assessment Items 

Some assessments in this course may require you to undertake tasks in a workplace/simulated environment. Where this is required, you will need to arrange access to a workplace/simulated environment and a suitably qualified other party to observe you performing the required tasks.

Given that some students may already be able to demonstrate their competence in some units, a recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment process may be available to students to recognise skills and knowledge that may have been gained through formal and informal training and/or learning, work experience and life experience.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and monitor implementation of the operational plan to provide efficient and effective workplace practices within the organisation’s productivity and profitability plans.

Management at a strategic level requires systems and procedures to be developed and implemented to facilitate the organisation’s operational plan. This unit applies to individuals who manage the work of others and operate within the parameters of a broader strategic and/or business plan.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage the performance of staff who report to them directly. Development of key result areas and key performance indicators and standards, coupled with regular and timely coaching and feedback, provide the basis for performance management.

This unit describes skills and knowledge required to manage risks in a range of contexts across an organisation or for a specific business unit or area in any industry setting.

It applies to individuals who are working in positions of authority and are approved to implement change across the organisation, business unit, program or project area. They may or may not have responsibility for directly supervising others.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead teams in the workplace and to actively engage with the management of the organisation. It applies to individuals working at a managerial level who facilitate work teams and build a positive culture within their work teams. At this level, work will normally be carried out using complex and diverse methods and procedures requiring the exercise of considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage a range of meetings including overseeing the meeting preparation processes, chairing meetings, organising the minutes and reporting meeting outcomes.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop strategies to manage organisational systems that ensure products and services are delivered and maintained to standards agreed by the organisation.

It applies to individuals who supervise the provision of quality customer service within an organisation’s procedures framework by others. At this level, individuals must exercise considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake financial management within a work team in an organisation. It includes planning and implementing financial management approaches, supporting team members whose role involves aspects of financial operations, monitoring and controlling finances and reviewing and evaluating effectiveness of financial management processes.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage all aspects of recruitment selection and induction processes, in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. It applies to individuals or human resource personnel who take responsibility for managing aspects of selecting new staff and orientating those staff in their new positions.

It is not assumed that the individual will be directly involved in the selection processes themselves, although this may well be the case.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to understand and respond to instructions; to carry out routine tasks and communicate with a range of internal/external clients in a medical environment; as well as use appropriate medical terminology.

It applies to individuals who apply a broad range of competencies in various medical administration contexts. They may exercise discretion and judgment using appropriate knowledge to provide technical advice and support to a team.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. This unit applies to all workers.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research information about compliance and ethical practice responsibilities, before developing and monitoring policies and procedures to meet those responsibilities.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor a billing and accounting system in a health practice, with consideration of client accessibility, practice viability and regulatory and legislative requirements.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to follow organisational infection prevention and control procedures, including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to infection risks. This unit applies to individuals working in health and direct client care contexts.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide information about infection prevention and control procedures, integrate those procedures into work practices and monitor workplace performance.

This unit applies to individuals working in health or direct client care contexts, who have coordination, team leading or supervisory responsibility in relation to infection prevention and control. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.         

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish, maintain and evaluate work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area, according to WHS legislative requirements.
