A Health Administrative Worker performs the duties of an Administrative Assistant in health and clinic practices, hospitals, and community centres. Your role will be to welcome patients and visitors, answer phones, schedule appointments and keep those appointments running on time. You will also be responsible for ensuring all information is kept up-to-date and confidential and will assist patients with completing the necessary forms and documentation to allow the health providers to perform their jobs.

In this hospital or clinic-based role, a Health Ward Clerk is responsible for the clerical and reception duties of a ward or clinic. Ward Clerks provide administrative support, including answering calls, updating confidential patient data, and ensuring Doctors, Nurses, and other Healthcare Professionals have access to patients' medical records. 

Education

Whilst there are no entry requirements mandated by the training package, your skills and capabilities to undertake this training product will be assessed, and advice on suitability will be provided during the pre-enrolment process.

Minimum Age

You will need to be at least 16 years old. If you are under 18 your enrolment form will need to be signed by a parent or guardian.

Residency Status

You will need to be a permanent Australian resident or equivalent.

Assessment Items 

Some assessments in this course may require you to undertake tasks in a workplace/simulated environment. Where this is required, you will need to arrange access to a workplace/simulated environment and a suitably qualified other party to observe you performing the required tasks.

Given that some students may already be able to demonstrate their competence in some units, a recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment process may be available to students to recognise skills and knowledge that may have been gained through formal and informal training and/or learning, work experience and life experience.

Certificate III in Health Administration

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

The unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

*This course contains the unit, HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, which must be completed through an external RTO. Foundation Education has an agreement in place with Red Cross Australia (RTOID 3605) which allows students to receive training for this unit at a reduced price. Please note that the cost of this external training is not included in any of your course fees. Upon completion, you will need to submit a copy of your first aid certificate in order for us to process a Credit Transfer against this unit on your student record. If you have chosen your own third-party provider, you must submit a certified copy of your certificate. If you have undertaken training with Red Cross Australia, you must forward Foundation Education the email you receive which contains the electronic copy of your certificate.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain daily financial records such as reconciling debtors’ and creditors’ systems, preparing and maintaining a general ledger and trial balance and includes activities associated with monitoring cash control for accounting purposes.

It applies to individuals who are skilled operators and apply a broad range of competencies in various work contexts and may exercise discretion and judgement using appropriate theoretical knowledge of financial records.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to make a pro-active and positive contribution to workplace innovation. It applies to individuals working in any industry or community context, in both small and large organisations who take a pro-active approach to identifying, suggesting and developing ideas about better ways of doing things at a practical operational level in a specific area of activity.

While the individual’s overall work is undertaken with some supervision and guidance, they apply discretion, judgement and effective interpersonal skills in order to contribute to workplace innovation.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain patient records within an existing medical records management system, under the supervision of a senior receptionist or practice manager.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify customer needs, deliver and monitor customer service and identify improvements in the provision of customer service. It applies to individuals who apply a broad range of competencies in various work contexts.

In this role, individuals often exercise discretion and judgement using appropriate theoretical knowledge of customer service to provide technical advice and support to customers over short or long term interactions.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to gather, organise and apply workplace information in the context of an organisation’s work processes and knowledge management systems. It applies to individuals who perform a defined range of skilled operations in various work contexts.

They may exercise discretion and judgement using appropriate knowledge of information management to provide technical advice and support to a team.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to classify, register, and track records and information about records within a business or records system.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to understand and respond to instructions; to carry out routine tasks and communicate with a range of internal/external clients in a medical environment; as well as use appropriate medical terminology.

It applies to individuals who apply a broad range of competencies in various medical administration contexts. They may exercise discretion and judgment using appropriate knowledge to provide technical advice and support to a team.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide advice to patients regarding fee structures and process referrals, as well as prepare and process medical accounts for a range of patients.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, management and other industry providers. This unit applies to a range of health and community service contexts where workers may communicate face-to-face, in writing or using digital media and work with limited responsibility under direct or indirect supervision.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. This unit applies to all workers.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to follow organisational infection prevention and control procedures, including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to infection risks. This unit applies to individuals working in health and direct client care contexts.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for workers to participate in safe work practices to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others.

The unit applies to all workers who require knowledge of workplace health and safety (WHS) to carry out their own work, either under direct supervision or with some individual responsibility.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.
